Australian athletes given green light to compete at Tokyo 2020 Games

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced it intends to follow recommendations by the international olympic body and assurances from Japanese organisers to allow Australian athletes to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Games. "The clear message from our Japanese friends is the games will continue - the IOC (International Olympic Committee) is still planning towards the games; to start on July 24," Australia Team Chef De Mission Ian Chesterman said. "We'll continue to look to the IOC for their advice, understanding their advice is taken from the World Health Organisation which is pivotal in underlying our support in the confidence we have the games will be a safe place to take our athletes." The AOC has planned to implement measures such as assigning more base camps, longer base camp options, ensuring athletes are in controlled environments at the Olympic Village and scheduling and staggering specially-chartered flights to ensure the safety of athletes is not compromised.
