Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says “we have to be sensible” about reviewing the government’s JobKeeper subsidy because of the scheme’s substantial cost to taxpayers. The government revealed it would review the viability of the JobKeeper scheme as it considered rolling back welfare payments as nation-wide restrictions lifted. “The JobKeeper program was a necessary support but it is not an ideal program to have in place for any length of time given its cost to taxpayers,” Mr Canavan told Sky News. He said the original projected cost of the scheme was $20 billion per month, but was now “revised down [to $10 billion per month] because the economy hasn’t fallen as fast as we thought”. “We are borrowing all of that money and that means it has to be paid back at some time by Australian taxpayers,” he said. “Small business in this country can know that we’ve got their back, that we have provided the support required when needed but we’re also mindful of the taxpayers interests here and how much this is costing.” Image: News Corp Australia
