Economic recovery a ‘chance’ to ‘lay foundations’ for tax reform

Cornerstone Group Senior Director James Cullen says while the government has downplayed talks of increasing tax in the current economic environment the language could shift in the future. NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and former Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson have called for the government to begin significant tax forms. Mr Cullen told Sky News it was reasonable for the government to put aside tax reform for the moment because “the focus is on trying to get through that recovery, get people from unemployment back into work - they don’t want to be talking about increasing tax”. “Whether or not we see the dialogue and the narrative from the government change in the next few months, we’ve got a budget in October, if there’s an election in the second half of next year, they’ve got a window to do it,” he said. “I think there is a willingness in the community that there needs to be, we need to sort of change something when we get out of this to be able to build the economy. “That economic recovery is going to be slow, it’s going to take a while and now is actually a really good chance to start to put those building blocks in place for tax reform.” Image: Getty
